Breakfast Gravy

I must admit, I am not a fan of gravy at all. But when I had the bakery, we served so many biscuit and gravy breakfast plates that I felt the need to share it with you! This rich, creamy, and completely allergen-free gravy is perfect for biscuits, toast, or even savory waffles! Made with simple pantry ingredients, it comes together quickly for a comforting, homemade addition to any meal.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup olive oil

  • 1 cup rice flour (brown or white rice, but never sweet rice flour)

  • 4 cups rice milk (or another unsweetened alternative milk)

  • 1 ½ tsp salt

  • ¾ tsp black pepper

  • 1 ½ tsp sage

  • ¾ tsp garlic powder

Directions:

  1. Prep First! Measure out all ingredients before starting, as you’ll be whisking constantly. I love these measuring cups and the Pyrex liquid measuring glasses.

  2. In a medium pot, combine olive oil and rice flour over high heat. Whisk until the mixture comes together to from a paste.

  3. Add spices (salt, pepper, garlic, and sage) and whisk just until combined.

  4. Pour in 2 cups of rice milk and whisk over high heat until the mixture reaches a low boil and begins to thicken again.

  5. Once the mixture starts forming a thick paste, add in the remaining rice milk and whisk vigorously until all the lumps are gone.

  6. Continue whisking as the gravy thickens again.

  7. Once it starts to thicken for the second time, taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

  8. Remove from heat as soon as it reaches the desired consistency.

  9. Serve immediately while it’s hot!

  10. If you feel like it’s too lumpy and you messed it all up, just give it a quick immersion blend (like this one!)

Storage & Reheating:

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

  • Freeze for up to one month.

  • Reheat on the stove over medium heat, stirring frequently.

Tips for the Perfect Gravy:

Adjust Thickness: Add a small amount of rice milk to thin or a few tablespoons of rice flour to thicken. Always bring back to a low simmer after any adjustments.
Flour Substitutions: If rice flour isn’t an option, quinoa or millet flour can be used—but you may need extra seasoning to balance their stronger flavors.

This easy, foolproof gravy is perfectly creamy, savory, and a must-have for your allergen-free kitchen! 🌱✨
